RTÉ make a visit to Sixth class in Room 14

We had a really exciting day in 6th class, Room 14 on Wednesday just past March 28th…RTÉ came to film Mr. Mooney and the class as they learned about “buying Irish”. We discovered the importance of really examining labels on food to find out where they come from. We were surprised to find out that many products which we thought were Irish were actually from different countries. We were also amazed to discover that if each Irish household was to spend just €4 more on Irish goods 6,000 jobs would be created!!

Watch out for us on “The Consumer Show” on RTÉ One from April 10th at 8.30pm. we will feature in the episode on April 17th 🙂 Exciting times!!!

  1. I hope we are on the show next week. I cant wait to see Mr.Mooney he looked so professional looking at the cameras. Everyone was wondering how he stayed so calm and especially when all the girls were doing there hair. Cian Gleeson having a fit when his hair would not go the way he wanted it to.I hope they come in again because we had a good laugh that day.

    ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !And also EVERYONE BUY IRISH ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !
Help the country get back into wack . Ha anyways come on BUY IRISH
and its hard to tell if stuff is actually Irish. So all you need to do is look for Bord Bia an the little IE at the bottom. But dont trust the names because most stuff with Irish names arent actually Irish so be careful 🙂
Keep our Irish hearatage and buy if we dont buy Irish .People will stop making Irish products if no people buy them!!!

I love trying to buy Irish its a good laugh racing around the supermarket looking for Irish Products. But i still cant believer DONEGAL CATCH ISINT IRISH !!!!!!!!!!

But you win some you lose some (fish).
But dont forget to BUY IRISH.
If everyone just spent a few more euro on Irish products we would be out of the Ressiuon a lot sooner.
    so come on ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !
Its not cutting back its just spending your money on Irish insteat of British or German products.:) 🙂 🙂

  2. I will explode with you Thomas because it really is frustrating watching getting really excited and then they don’t show us!!😃😃 Rhat really is s big difference buying Irish we should msle a big sign with that on it and put it sf the front of the school…

  3. There is so many comments .
It’s great that we can all have are say about this on the blog. It was a great idea that the teachers came up with . 🙂 !!!!!!!

  4. All those products weren’t Irish! I couldn’t believe that. But there were a few products that were Irish. And I wish they’d show us on T.V already because if they leave it another week i may just explode! :P. Irish products can be hard to find but its worth it. Because say if you buy an American product 0nly about 1/10 of that money would go to Ireland. But if you buy an Irish product about 11/12 would go to Ireland, creating jobs and getting us out of resession! Thanks to Mr. Mooney, Ms. Mccabe and RTE for allowing us to be on the consumer show!

  5. Oh Bronagh. I am so angry that we weren’t on it last night!! GRRR!! What did you have in your all Irish breakfast Megan?? I was thinking this morning when I bought my orange juice it said that it was Irish but how could it be all Irish of they can’t grow oranges in Ireland. It would be soooo cool of we could do sortta what Megan did but have an all Ireland day. We need to do that!!! Pleaseeeee!?!?!? Hey Delphi was the hummus nicer??? 😄

  6. Haaaaaaah!!! BRONAGH!!!! 😀 :O Have you ever heard of the red traffic light on my blackboard? You’ll know all about it tomorrow 😛
Only messin…my face was burning up! Oh well!! At least I had my snazzy jumper on 😉

  7. Thanks Grace thats much appreciated haha:) would’nt you though?
if you saw a person looking at a loaf of bread or something for ages would you not laugh? im sorry but this is the truth i would haha:)
hopefully its on tonight:) its getting recorded on my tele. well hopefully it wont be too embaressing and they volume down the brightness of the cameras because WOW was Mr.Mooney red. sorry Mr.Mooney it had to be said:/
awh hopefully you’ll look ok hah.Ide say you will

  8. It was really fun doing the Consumer show for RTE!!!!! 😛 :P.when the RTE cameras finally went off, everybody just relaxed.XD.I cant believe RTE picked us ,room14 out of the whole of the school, out of the whole of Ireland woo hoo!!!!

    REMEMBER:try to buy buy buy Irish products………;D ;D ;D ;D

  9. I love the way this conversation has expanded so much and I do agree with Bronagh and Delphi (by the way Delphi your speech was very accurate)and yes Bronagh we would look like completely dumb walking around the supermarket looking at the back of everything for ages,SCARLETT for us!:D

  10. Guys, do you know that I found humus that was made in Ireland! I was not expecting that! I’m really looking at every single food product and see if it’s Irish. What did you guys find that was not Irish? I want to know as much as I can! How long is taking to do your shop when trying to look out for Irish products?

  11. I just had a full irish dinner and it dosent taste any diffrent. Its just a bit harder to find Irish products but its well worth it . You’re helping your country . All the money we spend buying diffrent country’s products goes to that country so give it a try at least and blog back and tell us what you found out. You could have some fun with it too. It dosent have to be with your mam or dad, it can be with anyone maybe even class mates. I’m certinly going to try it. Why dont you and if you do you will definitily see some changes good luck. I hope everyone does try it and maybe write what you bought up and show us that were all able to try. Oh and a big thank you to Mr.Mooney for helping us to try more and also an even Bigger Thank you To RTE for coming in because without them we wouldent even be having this discussion.

  12. I think that the only reason that other food companies use Irish names is that they think that Irish culture is awesome. It’s funny how other people from other country like our culture more than us. I really think it’s time we start embracing our culture. If we the young age of our time start using our culture, everyone else will

  13. i couldnt believe about the DONEGAL CATCH but we found out yesterday in classs that some donegal catch’s are irish:D
i even asked my mam and dad to try buy more irish and they’re finding it very difficult because some irish products are really expensive.i can’t wait until RTE COME IN THE NEXT TIME it’ll be so enjoyable and funny to watch MR.Mooney on tv as well as the people in my class 🙂 CANT WAIT!!! one more thing try your hardest to buy irish i am.

  14. I agree with Bianca the camera was going straight into your face, but I like when they came because there were talking about why we should buy Irish. and one more thing I want someone to answer this why should buy irish food?

  15. i find it really hard to buy irish food to , would you not look like a weirdo standing just looking at a product for ages looking for the irish sign? haha:) i can imagine me in superquinn just looking at a product really concentrating to find the sign as you do , haha Mr.Mooney said today and hes right that some irish food products are really expensive so we buy the cheaper one thats what lots of people do but buy irish we worth it !!:) i know its a resesion but at least the money is staying in our own country. but at least now when the programme is on we can tell everyone to watch it and they can see for themselves how to buy irish and what kind of products are irish. so if you can try your hardest to buy irish products im am too:)

  16. Maith sibh rang a sé 😀

You all seem to agree that companies should make it easier to buy Irish by incorporating some sort of symbol or label on the packaging of the product to make it easy to identify Irish made and produced products.
Daire; you know that oval ur talking about that you see on the back of products with the ‘IE’ in it? Well as far as I know that just means something was done to the product in Ireland. It doesn’t necessarily mean it is 100% Irish.
It’s all very confusing. If the companies and the government want us to spend our money in Ireland on Irish goods they really need to make it easier.
I’ve noticed that lots of the special offers in supermarkets are on non-Irish products. It’s hard for Irish companies to compete with the larger multi-national firms.

  17. I just want to say it waz so fun and I hope they come in again and anyone who sees this will come and watch us on RTE!!!!!!!!!!!

    THANK U RTE

  18. I agree with Delphi the shops should totally make a space for Irish products and label it big enough that people can actually see it

I can’t wait to see our class on tv
it’s mad what we learn every day

  19. I agree with Delphi and i’m still hung up on what to say a bout the bogs aswell but theres still so much to learn on both of these subjects and i dont want to go ranting on for too long so all i’m going to say is IS BREA LIOM EIRE AGUS BIA!!!!(agus eire bia)

  20. I have now learnt to enjoy shopping because it so much fun racing around my local superquinn finding Irish products. Please don’t forget that we don’t just have Irish made products but our own Irish language, GAEILGE!!!
Chuaigh me go dti an siopa agus cheannaigh me triocha tri prducts!
Don’t forget that we also have our own sports so don’t forget to get out there and get started! I hope that we are on tv soon because it has been a long time waiting for a great episode. It is soooo easy to buy Irish in the supermarkets if you follow thses simple steps. 1. Find your nearest supermarket( i recommend superquinn because it is more irish than Tesco but no offense!) 2. Look clearly at the labels and BOOM! You have gotten an Irish shopping trip!!! Thank you to all if you read it this far! Aigul=)

  21. I think it’s really difficult to buy Irish food because when people get to the shop sometimes they forget to check for the Irish label.Writing that the food is Irish on the price tag would help to see that it’s Irish.

I really enjoyed the RTE when they came and it was so cool to be on TV.

    Thank you.

  22. I cant believe the amount of food that is not Irish…But they have irish names!

    I wonder why ??

I am finding it vary hard to get Irish food and drink

REMEMBER GET IRISH FOOD IT MAKES JOBS !!!

  23. It’s really hard to find Irish products but it makes it easier when there’s a big sign saying ” buy me I’m Irish!” That journalist is right we really don’t have the luxury of buying irish anymore; it’s all so expensive. Has anyone found it easy to buy Irish?

  24. iIts hard for me to buy Irish food because I usually buy asian food but I increased my irish food when I figured out that some food like donegal catch aren’t really made in Ireland. (Oh and is it on??) 🙂

  25. I Found It Really Easy To Buy Irish Products.
All You Have To Do Is Look For A Irish Sign Saying
Made In Ireland.Like The Bord Bia Quality Mark And Then You Know Its Definitely Irish.I Was surprised Lyons Tea Bags And Donegal Catch Aren’t Even Irish! 🙂

  26. I was trying to buy Irish the other day. It took me around 1 hour to do my whole shopping; I mean seriously it should be easier. I agree with you Mr Mooney, I guess you can’t trust the labels. This week I’m going to start buying even more Irish. The thing that is sometimes stopping me from doing that is that Irish products are so expensive. There are things that help me to buy Irish like the stickers on the packages like IRISH FOODS, BORD BIA sign and the Irish flag. 😀 There should be a special place in the stores that is for Irish foods only. We as a class should start helping people to buy Irish and instead of buying potatoes from say Spain will be buying Irish, enjoy wonderful food and we’ll know where our foods came from. I think buy Irish is so much healthier too. 🙂

  27. KERRYGOLD GARLIC BREAD IS MADE IN GERMANY, MR MOONEY!!!!!!!! WHAT? That is just not fair!

I’ve been trying to inform as many people as possible about buying Irish. With all the people I told, everyone of them were shocked about some Donegal Catch products weren’t produced in Ireland and that Charleville cheese isn’t fully produced in Ireland. Not many people know about this so they think that they’re buying Irish but they’re not. It’s a cruel trick that shouldn’t be happening.

It is true that Irish products are dearer than other products but we all really need to start buying Irish. It’s just a little extra time and money to make sure you’re buying the right product.

The thing is, if we buy Irish, it’s just like putting that extra money in a box and saving it until we are older. It’s just like that. By buying Irish, we are actually helping ourselves in the future. Lots of people have family over broad due to less jobs. If we buy Irish, we might not have to emigrate to other countries and leave the country we love. It’s not that much to spend a little time longer during your shop to check the labels to see if it’s Irish. It’s not that much to spend a little more money on products than usual when we know it will be supporting us in the future.

As I said before with Daire, the Irish signs on products are just too small. I don’t mean that the sign has to be the size of the packet but just bigger. I think it would be a good idea if they had a section of Irish products so that people can find them easily.

I have to say, I’m not happy with the way some products call themselves after a place in Ireland and are not made in Ireland at all! That confuses people and make them think that the product is Irish. It’s just not fair! A perfect example of this is Lyon’s Tea. It say’s on the Lyon’s Tea ad that it was ‘Ireland’s best tea for 100 years’ or something. Well, when RTE came in, we found out that Lyon’s Tea was in fact not Irish and is made in England. So they lied to our faces. However, Barry’s Tea is Irish.

I hope you all think about buying Irish. It will really help us in the future. What do you guys think?

  28. I am actually realizing how hard it is to find Irish products in supermarkets! all that really shows you where a products comes from is the tiny little oval on the very back with IE in it! Well done to Bianca for finding an Irish Donegal Catch meal. We thought they were all from abroad! Congratulations! 🙂

  29. it is very hard to find Irish products because it should have a star that say they are irish products

  30. I think it’s very important to buy irish because it keeps money in ireland. When we buy products produced in foriegn countries we are giving money to them when we need it greatly at the moment! It’s also weird that some irish products have pretty big green signs on the front saying its made in Ireland and others have a tiny “ie” sign at the back!

  31. I think it is very hard to find Irish products because they do not have a label or star on them that say ‘Irish product’. That is why think it is hard to find Irish products.

  32. Hi
That day was so much fun. The microphone man let me and Bianca put his ear phones on. It is quite difficult to find Irish products because only some have the sign on the front. I found out that day that Cadbury’s Splats are not Irish; they’re actually from England. We also found out that some of the Donegal catch fish aren’t even caught in Ireland…mad right?! 🙂

  33. Ok great news, so when I went shopping with rte they said that mr. Mooney that you are a fantastic teacher and we are a very well behaved class!!! It’s so hard to find Irish products. You know the way when rte came into our class and we looked at the Donegal catch and it wasn’t Irish yeh well today when I went the Donegal catch that I saw was in fact IRISH!!!! It’s quite weird how many things are in fact Irish. Delphi and Dáire are so right they shouldn’t really name the products with an Irish name when they are from a different country. I also told them about the blog. It took me about 1 hour and 30 minutes to see if the stuff was Irish but it was worth because I am helping my future with a job and many others! Food luck and do try because it will be worth it. 😃😃😃

  34. It’s extremely hard to buy Irish products because, the fact is, the signs are too small! It’s hard to see them and for people with poor eyesight. It would make it easier if Irish products had a bigger sign on it. It would also be helpful if they had a section of Irish products in supermarkets. We have been trying to buy Irish and we haven’t realized how hard it was until now. Charleville Cheese is not actually made in Charleville in Cork! Really it would help if they didn’t name their products after Irish places when the products are not actually made in Ireland. It’s just not fair. Dear Saibhin, I’m sure there are gluten and lactose free products that are Irish made. Don’t worry about that!! 🙂
Daire agus Delphi grá bia na hÉireann, agus ba mhaith linn gach duine chun iarracht a cheannach bia na hEireann!
    Meas do thír!
    thank you for reading!
    Daire and Delphixx

  35. Thomas you’re getting very passionate about it 🙂 You made your point very well!

I just discovered today that Kerrygold Garlic bread is made in…Germany! The butter seems to be Irish made but I’m beginning to trust the labels less. The wording on them seems to be written to fool us in so many cases.

Are u finding it easy or difficult to buy Irish? What helps? What are the obstacles in the way of buying Irish? A journalist said recently that we don’t have the luxury to buy Irish because the other products are cheaper. Would you agree? Keep an eye out when you’re shopping with your parents and let us know.

That’s a pity that you’re not able to buy Irish products Saibhin. Are there any gluten free Irish alternatives?

  36. That was really cool! I was really surprised that some of the products weren’t irish like lyons tea and donegal catch. Its kind of wierd really I mean ‘donegal’ catch. I bet that you probably can’t even catch fish in Donegal! It’s really insulting to irish people but smart by the company because people like buying irish so they’ll make lots of money from an ‘irish’ product that’s not even irish! 🙁 . But all anger aside it was a great day and I cant wait for them to come back! thanks to Mr. Mooney and Ms. Mccabe for making it happen. Mr Mooney was talking so differently on camera! Dia Duit a mhuinteoir
(by the the way dia duit actually means god bless you! because dia means god and duit means you. I bet you didn’t know that! so next time you say hello to someone as gailge you’re actually asking god to bless them!) 🙂

  37. ITs very hard find Irish products but just think you could be saving yourself and others from emigrating. I agree with Delphi and all of the above. Oh and I LOVE the way megan wrote in Irish you must also try and bring back the Irish language. Be proud of being Irish and support Ireland anyway that you can. Watch the consumer show every Tuesday evening on rte1 at 8:30. Good luck!!!!!

  38. Ha ha! That day was SO fun! All the cameras where really big!
Is brae liom Irish food! (I love Irish food!)
I can’t wait to see ourselves on telly!

  39. hey
I can’t buy most irish food I’m gluten intolerant and my mum is lactose
    intorlerant
    🙁

  40. Loved this project! But I thought that it was a bit strange that u had to look on the back of products to see if the were irish they should put that on the front in big letters”WE’RE IRISH AND WE ARE PROUD!!”I love to support irish products at home and everyday. we are irish and proud 😀 P.S Mr mooney what are you talking about if your gonna turn in to anything it will probubly be a banana!!!:D

  41. is brea liom a bheith ag cheannach gaeilge agus broduil.
THIS MEANS I love buying irish be irish and be proud!!!!!!!
Cuidiú lenár tíre fháil amarach an sheachaint CHEANNACH GAEILGE !!!!!!!!
THIS MEANS Help our country get out of resession and buy Irish
    THANKYOU !!!!!

  42. I’m lookin forward to finding out how you’re all getting on as you try to increase the amount of Irish products used at home…I’ve become a bit obsessed!! It’s taking me much longer to make my way around the supermarket these days…it’s really difficult to find the information on labels and to find Irish alternative to certain things…like Easter eggs!!!
On that note…hope you’re all having a brilliant Easter break. I think I MAY turn into a chocolate egg I’m eating so much!!! Nom
    Nom 😀

  43. That was so fun!
it was funny when Mr.Mooney started talking and the camera wasnt rolling! 😛
And then the camera guy went right beside Cian!

  44. That was so cool! Mr Mooney! You looked so smart in your fancy jumper and trousers! It was different as you always were jeans! Anyway, I never actually thought about buying irish products. If we buy Irish, we are actually surporting ourselves (the young people) in the future so we don’t have to emigrate. (that means leave the country because there is no work) The most amazing thing I found out was that Donegal Catch is NOT produced in Ireland! What do you think of that!

  45. That was sooo cool. It was so funny when the camera zoomed in on your face. I can’t believe that we are going to on tv.

  46. That was sooo cool. It was so funny when the camera zoomed in on your face. I can’t believe that we are going to on tv. Don’t forget to watch us.
