The children in Room 13 went on a mission to make a difference this week. We went to Sandymount strand to partake in a beach clean and ocean plastics workshop. We learned so much about plastic, and plastic alternatives and had so much fun. We even found a mermaid’s purse! Thank you to @flossiebeachcl1 for such an enjoyable and informative workshop!

Pysanky eggs in Room 13

The children in Room 13 created their own Pysanky eggs for Easter. To create our Pysanky eggs, we used a wax-resist method. We drew out designs on our egg with crayon and then placed the eggs in food colouring. The areas that we decorated with crayon resisted the food-colouring and resulted in beautifully decorated eggs!

Ukraine-Inspired Folk Art for International Women’s Day in Room 13

It was International Women’s Day on 8th March. We chose to discuss Women in art and we learned that in the major art museums in America 87% of all the art in their collections is by male artists. We had class discussions about why there are not as many art pieces by women in these galleries and why we think this might be the case.

For International Women’s Day, we decided to take inspiration from a female artist called Maria Prymachenko. Maria Prymachenko is known for her unusual and colourful art. When she was a child, Maria was taken ill with polio and this painful illness had a big impact on her. Her family said Maria grew to be very thoughtful and considerate, having lots of compassion for all living things and so we decided this was why much of her art featured plants and animals.

We hope you like our art!

In my sparring group, which had 19 people in it, I took home a bronze medal which is 3rd place! I got pizza after the competition which made the day great!

Ming Vases in Room 13

As part of our study of China, we learned about Ming vases and created our very own!

Here’s how we did it:

To achieve the porcelain effect we first coloured our vases blue using oil pastels and then painted them using white chalk paint and used the reverse end of our paintbrush to etch our own designs and reveal the blue colour beneath the paint.

Ming Vases are made from Porcelain and have been sold for up to €1,200,000! Each design can be different and tells a story. Look closely at the designs on our vases and see if you can figure out the story it tells!
